The perfect 2 days in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge
An hour and fifteen minutes from both Montréal and Ottawa, Maison Kilmar is a heritage Victorian cottage set on the shore of White Rocks Lake, in the Laurentians. Here is how we would spend a weekend here: a slow first day built around the lake, and a second day of adventure in the surrounding area. Shape it to your own pace.
Day 1
The lake, the dock and the fire pit
Afternoon
Arrival and settling in
Stop at Dépanneur Kilmar in the village for arrival supplies — groceries, ice, and the best local pizza. Then head to the cottage, drop the bags, and let the quiet of the lake do its work. Maison Kilmar sleeps seven; take a moment to sort out the bedrooms before anyone claims the best view.
Late afternoon
The lake and the private dock
White Rocks Lake is private, crystal-clear and calm. Head down to the dock, put the paddleboards in the water, or take the rowboat out for a slow crossing. It is a lake made for drifting — no motors, no crowds, just the water and the hills.
Evening
Hot tub, fire pit and sunset
At sunset, light the fire pit by the water and sink into the hot tub. Once it is fully dark, move inside to the wood-burning fireplace. This is the signature evening here: nothing to do, nowhere to be.
Day 2
The river, the golf and the falls
The lake is private, but Maison Kilmar is not isolated. On the second day, pick one adventure — or string a few together. Here are three ways to fill the day, all under 20 minutes away.
Morning
Rouge River rafting
About ten minutes away, the Rouge River is one of Quebec’s most celebrated whitewater rivers. Rafting Nouveau Monde and Propulsion Rafting & Canyon run guided descents for every skill level — perfect for a group. Book ahead in July and August.
Alternative
Golf at Lac Carling
For a quieter morning, Golf Lac Carling — an 18-hole course 15 minutes away — offers generous fairways and open views across the Laurentian hills. Head out early to play before the afternoon heat.
Afternoon
The Seven Sisters falls or the mine-history walk
To close the day, two outings that need no gear. The Seven Sisters falls, on Chemin de la Rivière Rouge, can be reached on foot from the footbridges above the rapids — dramatic in spring. Or, closer to the cottage, follow the story of the magnesite mine that gave rise to the lake and the village.
